N90bn-Hajj: Imagine That Amount Of Money in Health, Agriculture and Education – Prof. Anthony Kila
Professor Anthony Kila, Director of the Commonwealth Institute of Advanced and Professional Studies, has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s approval of N90 billion for the 2024 Hajj, citing the country’s ongoing economic hardship. In an interview with Arise News, Kila emphasized that such a large sum could be better utilized in critical sectors like health, agriculture, and education, which would yield long-term benefits.
Kila expressed dismay at the prioritization of pilgrimage over pressing national issues, particularly given the current economic challenges, including rising food inflation and electricity tariff hikes. He urged a rethink, suggesting that even if individuals can afford the pilgrimage, it is not the right time, and “God will understand.”

These are capital investments that will yield things and if we’re so crazed about going on pilgrimage, they can go next year, they can go another time.
