According to a report by The Nation on May 2, 2026, political developments ahead of the 2027 general elections in Rivers State are increasingly shaped by the influence of former governor and current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, as well as the continued silence of Governor Siminalayi Fubara regarding his political future.
Reports indicate that Wike may have identified House of Representatives Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda, as his preferred governorship candidate for 2027, with Rivers State Assembly Majority Leader, Major Jack, allegedly considered as a running mate. Although this has not been officially confirmed, the speculation has generated significant political discussion within the state.
At the same time, supporters of Governor Fubara are said to have obtained nomination forms from the All Progressives Congress (APC) on his behalf, suggesting a possible second-term ambition. However, Fubara has not publicly addressed the development, leaving observers uncertain about his intentions.
Unlike previous election cycles marked by intense political activity, the current atmosphere in Rivers remains relatively calm. Analysts attribute this to Wike’s dominant role as a political power broker and Fubara’s silence, both of which have contributed to uncertainty among political stakeholders.
Wike is believed to wield significant influence across both the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) through what has been described as a “Rainbow Coalition,” an alliance reportedly coordinating political strategy and power-sharing arrangements in the state.
The PDP’s decline in Rivers has been linked to the prolonged political rift between Wike and Fubara, as well as Fubara’s reported move to the APC in 2025, which shifted the balance of power in favor of the ruling party across key political structures.
Meanwhile, opposition parties such as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Labour Party have struggled to build strong grassroots support ahead of 2027.
For now, Rivers State’s political direction appears to depend largely on Wike’s final decisions and whether Fubara will eventually clarify his political ambitions….See More
