President Donald Trump has issued a fresh warning to Iran over reports that ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz may be facing charges or restrictions. In a post shared on Truth Social, Trump said Iran had “better stop now” if it was collecting fees from oil tankers using the vital waterway.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most important oil routes, with a large percentage of global crude exports passing through it daily. Trump’s comment comes amid ongoing tensions between the United States, Iran and Israel, even after both sides agreed to a fragile ceasefire earlier this week.
Trump’s statement read in part: “If they are, they better stop now!” The president’s remark appeared to refer to reports that Iran could be demanding tolls from oil tankers moving through the Strait of Hormuz.
His latest post has increased fears that the ceasefire could collapse if Iran takes actions that Washington sees as a threat to global oil supplies. Trump has repeatedly insisted that Iran must reopen and keep the Strait of Hormuz free for international shipping. He has also said oil would continue flowing “with or without the help of Iran.”
