According to report by Nigerian Tribune on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, Senator Adams Oshiomhole has urged the Federal Government to confiscate the profits of South African-owned companies operating in Nigeria and channel the funds toward compensating Nigerians who suffered losses during xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
Speaking during Tuesday’s Senate plenary, the Edo North lawmaker said his proposal followed reports that a South African minister stated that Nigerians whose businesses were destroyed, properties looted, or relatives killed during the attacks would not receive compensation.
Oshiomhole argued that if South African authorities refused to compensate affected Nigerians, the Nigerian government should recover equivalent value from the earnings of South African businesses, including banks and other investments operating within the country.
According to him, the proceeds should be used to assist victims rather than relying on Nigerian taxpayers’ money.
He maintained that many Nigerians endured severe losses during the attacks and insisted it would be unfair for South African companies to continue making profits in Nigeria while victims remained uncompensated.
He added that the situation was clear enough to warrant immediate action without further investigation.
Responding to the proposal, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin condemned the attacks against Nigerians, describing the actions of those responsible as uncivilised.
However, he advised lawmakers to exercise restraint until the Senate committee investigating the matter concludes its work.
Jibrin also warned against making decisions solely based on reports circulating on social media.
He explained that the South African minister’s remarks referred specifically to people occupying land illegally, noting that individuals with valid property ownership documents would not lose their rights.
While questioning the circumstances that led to the displacement of Nigerians, Jibrin appealed to Oshiomhole to allow the Senate committee to complete its investigation before any retaliatory measures are considered.
He expressed confidence in the committee’s leadership and urged lawmakers to await its findings before determining the next course of action on the matter….See More
