According to a report by the official Facebook page of TheCable Newspaper on Thursday May 7th, 2026, fresh political tension erupted within the Nigerian Senate after former Edo State Governor and Senator, Adams Oshiomhole, openly declared that Senate President Godswill Akpabio would be ineligible to remain in office under the newly amended Senate leadership rules.
Speaking during after the heated discussion at the National Assembly, Oshiomhole questioned the fairness of introducing stricter leadership requirements that could indirectly affect the current Senate President himself.
“The Senate President became a minority leader, a principal officer during his first term as a senator during the 8th senate. Now he’s the one presiding and asking us to change those rules. As we speak today, the Senate President hasn’t spent up to 8 years even if you count his previous years and his current one. So if we pass the rule that you must do 8 consecutive years before you can become a Senate President, it means he has to lead by example by vacating because he’s presiding without acquiring the appropriate qualifications,” Oshiomhole stated.
The comments triggered fresh debate within political circles as lawmakers continue to analyse the implications of the amended Senate leadership guidelines.
The new rules reportedly introduce stricter conditions for occupying key leadership positions in the upper chamber, a move many believe could reshape future political calculations within the Senate.
While some lawmakers backed Oshiomhole’s argument and called for equal application of the rules, supporters of Akpabio insisted that the Senate President remains constitutionally qualified to continue in office.
Many Nigerians are now expecting lawmakers to prepare for possible further debates over the implementation and interpretation of the amended leadership rules….See More
