In a recent interview on Symfoni TV, former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme, Usman Yusuf, spoke on political ambition, party structures, and the rise of major opposition figures in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
During the interview, Yusuf stated, “Obi has never worked for his ticket; the APGA ticket was given to him, and he became governor.” He made the remark while discussing the political journey of Peter Obi and the internal dynamics that shape candidate emergence within political parties.
He explained that party nominations in Nigeria are sometimes influenced by political arrangements and negotiations rather than prolonged internal contests. According to him, Obi’s emergence under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) came through circumstances that differed from the rigorous political battles experienced by some other politicians.
Yusuf added that political success in Nigeria often depends not only on popularity but also on timing, alliances, and support from influential stakeholders within party structures.
He further stated that the debate over political experience and how candidates emerge continues to shape conversations within opposition politics, especially as parties prepare for another highly competitive election cycle.
