According to a report by Nigerian Tribune on Sunday, April 26, 2026, the All Progressives Congress has responded to increasing political activities among opposition groups ahead of the 2027 general elections, stating that it remains focused on governance and is not concerned about emerging coalition discussions.
The party’s position comes amid reports of renewed political consultations and meetings among opposition figures in different parts of the country, including recent gatherings linked to discussions on possible electoral cooperation.
The statement was made by the APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, during an appearance on a political programme in Nigeria.
He explained that the ruling party is prioritizing governance and internal planning rather than being distracted by opposition realignments.
According to him, political parties are expected to organise themselves independently, and the APC does not see the ongoing discussions among opposition groups as a direct challenge to its political structure or direction.
Recent political developments have seen opposition leaders hold meetings aimed at exploring possible collaboration ahead of future elections.
Some of these discussions have taken place in Ibadan, where political stakeholders gathered to consider strategies for strengthening their influence in the electoral process.
These efforts have included conversations about forming alliances or presenting a united front in order to improve their competitiveness in national politics.
Morka, however, maintained that the ruling party is not affected by whether opposition groups choose to merge or field a single candidate.
He stated that internal matters within opposition parties, including disagreements over leadership and structure, are not issues that the APC should be held responsible for.
According to him, political organisations must resolve their own disputes through their established processes without shifting blame to external actors.
He further argued that some opposition figures have been preoccupied with internal competition for leadership positions rather than focusing on presenting clear policy alternatives to the electorate.
He suggested that these internal struggles have contributed to instability within opposition ranks, which has in turn influenced their ability to present a unified position ahead of future elections.
His comments reflect the APC’s broader view that effective opposition should be based on coherent organisation and clear ideological direction.
The APC spokesperson also addressed concerns raised by some political actors who have suggested that the ruling party is contributing to a weakening of opposition structures.
He rejected these claims, stating that political parties operate independently and are responsible for their own internal management.
According to him, disputes within opposition parties are often the result of leadership disagreements and procedural issues rather than external interference.
Morka also dismissed suggestions that the current administration under President Bola Tinubu is contributing to the emergence of a one-party system in the country.
He described such claims as politically motivated and not reflective of Nigeria’s democratic environment.
He stated that the political system allows for multiple parties to operate freely, and that competition among parties remains active and ongoing.
In his remarks, he referenced historical political situations in Nigeria to support his position.
He pointed out that during previous administrations, dominant political parties also held significant influence at various levels of government without similar concerns being raised.
He specifically mentioned a period under former President Olusegun Obasanjo, during which the Peoples Democratic Party controlled a large number of state governments, suggesting that political dominance by a single party is not a new phenomenon in the country.
Morka maintained that the current political environment remains open and competitive, with multiple parties actively participating in governance and electoral processes.
He argued that the presence of strong political parties does not automatically translate into the absence of opposition or democratic competition.
