According to Vanguard, negotiations between the organized labor and the Federal Government hit a roadblock on Wednesday as labor representatives stormed out of the minimum wage committee meeting.
The government’s offer of N48,000 as the new minimum wage fell far short of the organized labor’s demand of N615,000.
The Tripartite Committee on New National Minimum Wage reconvened on Wednesday amidst high expectations. However, representatives from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) expressed outrage over the government’s proposal.
Professor Theophilus Ndubuaku, representing the NLC, voiced the frustration felt by labor, questioning the adequacy of the proposed N48,000 wage. “We asked whether the N48,000 is for transport, food, clothing, housing, or for what,” he stated, highlighting the lack of clarity in the government’s offer.
In response to what they perceived as a lack of seriousness from the government, labor representatives decided to walk out of the meeting.
