JUST IN: Chinese court rules companies cannot legally fire employees simply to replace them with cost-saving artificial intelligence

A court in Hangzhou, China, has ruled that a technology company illegally dismissed an employee after attempting to automate his role with artificial intelligence and reassign him to a lower-paying position. The decision establishes that AI-driven cost-cutting alone does not qualify as a valid “major change in objective circumstances” under China’s Labor Contract Law.

According to reports shared by @BRICSinfo, the company sought to replace part of the employee’s work with AI systems and subsequently offered him a different role at reduced pay. When the employee refused the reassignment, the company terminated his contract, citing operational restructuring.
