I Was Out Of The Country When Obi Called Me To Be His Running Mate—Ahmed

Former vice-presidential candidate Datti Baba-Ahmed has provided fresh details on how his political partnership with Peter Obi was formed ahead of the 2023 general elections, offering insight into the decisions and circumstances that shaped their ticket.

Baba-Ahmed spoke in a video shared by SYMFONI TV following his recent political move to the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), where he reflected on his experience during the election cycle and the reasoning behind his alliance with the former Labour Party presidential candidate.

He explained that before the 2023 elections, he held the belief that national leadership should reflect fairness and regional balance.

According to him, this perspective influenced his thinking about political participation at the time, including an initial interest in contesting for a senatorial position in Kaduna State. However, he said his plans changed as political developments unfolded.

Baba-Ahmed revealed that while he was outside the country, he received a call from Peter Obi inviting him to serve as his running mate.

He described the moment as unexpected, noting that Obi was facing resistance from several political actors who, in his words, were reluctant to associate with him during the early stages of the campaign.

He stated that despite the controversies surrounding Obi’s candidacy at the time, he felt compelled to accept the offer based on personal conviction and a sense of responsibility toward national unity and fairness.

He explained that his decision was guided by what he believed was necessary for political balance and justice within Nigeria’s democratic process.

During the campaign period, Baba-Ahmed said he was actively involved in efforts to manage internal disagreements and clarify issues within their political camp.

He noted that there were concerns around messaging, inclusion, and coordination, which he attempted to address as part of his role in the joint campaign structure.

He further suggested that some of the strategic recommendations he made during the election period, if fully implemented, might have influenced the final outcome of the contest, which ultimately resulted in the victory of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

While reflecting on his political future, Baba-Ahmed clarified that he does not see himself as someone who must necessarily pursue the presidency.

However, he emphasized that he remains open to leadership responsibilities if such roles are required in efforts to improve governance and national development….See More
