Governors Of Nigeria’s 36 States Reject N60,000 Minimum Wage, Insist It’s Too High For Them To Pay

According to The Nation, the governors of the 36 states of the federation have rejected the N60,000 minimum wage earlier proposed by the federal government to organized labour.

The governors’ collective position on the minimum wage was disclosed by the Director of Media and Public Affairs of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), Hajiya Halimah Salihu Ahmed, on Friday, June 7.

According to the governors, the proposed N60, 000 is not only unrealistic, untenable, and unsustainable but would also force many states to borrow to pay workers’ salaries.

After it admitted, in the statement, that a new minimum wage was due and expressing sympathy for the plight of worker, he said on part:

“However, the Forum urges all parties to consider the fact that the minimum wage negotiations also involve consequential adjustments across all cadres, including pensioners.

“All things considered, the NGF holds that the N60,000 minimum wage proposal is not sustainable and can not fly. It will simply mean that many states will spend all their FAAC allocations on just paying salaries with nothing left for development purposes.”

The forum then appealed to all parties involved in the negotiation, especially the labour unions, to put all socioeconomic variables into consideration and settle for something that is sustainable, durable, and fair to all other segments of the society who have legitimate claim to public resources…..See More
