Hope Uzodinma under pressure to forgo senatorial ambition, as deputy is forced to resign

The senatorial ambition of Hope Uzodimma has reportedly generated tension within the All Progressives Congress over concerns that he intends to occupy two elective positions simultaneously.

According to The Nation, the controversy surrounding his senatorial ambition was said to have contributed to the failed attempt to remove him as Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum on Thursday.

A highly placed source disclosed that some governors believed Uzodimma was overstretching his political influence, noting that he already serves as the Chairman of the PGF, a sitting governor, and Chairman of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors, while also aspiring to become a senator with the aim of emerging as President of the 11th Senate.

The source further stated that many governors were displeased with the development but eventually deferred to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in order to prevent his removal.

It was also gathered that pressure was mounting on the APC leadership to persuade Uzodimma to choose between remaining governor of Imo State and pursuing his senatorial ambition.

A source said: “Hope Uzodinma wants a senatorial seat before resigning as governor.

“He will then put an amenable candidate in charge as the new governor and a relation as the new deputy governor.

A source alleged that the plot had been ongoing for about a year and was allegedly conceived in London in collaboration with a former governor who is now a senator.

The source further claimed that intelligence reports about the development prompted the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, to push for changes to the Senate Rules in what was described as an undemocratic and unpopular manner.
