Tinubu: We Tried to Pull Him Down for Years but Failed Until 2020, When I Realised I Was Wrong – FFK

Former Aviation Minister and ambassador-designate Femi Fani-Kayode has reflected on his past opposition to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, admitting that efforts by critics to politically weaken the Nigerian leader ultimately failed.

In a lengthy post shared on his official X handle on Sunday May 10, 2026, Fani-Kayode said he was once among those who strongly opposed Tinubu before changing his position ahead of the 2023 presidential election.

According to him, years of political attacks against Tinubu did not succeed because the president possesses unusual resilience, patience and political skill.

“We tried to pull him down for years but failed,” Fani-Kayode wrote. “Yours truly was amongst the ranks of those that did so until 2020 when I realised I was wrong.”

The former minister said his change of heart came after what he described as a personal reassessment of Tinubu’s political character and leadership qualities. He added that he later became one of Tinubu’s vocal supporters during the 2023 election campaign.

Fani-Kayode further stated that several former critics of the president eventually aligned with him, arguing that Tinubu’s ability to forgive opponents and accommodate defectors has contributed to his political strength.
