According to a report by Punch on Monday, May 4, 2026, a member of the Action Democratic Congress, Chille Igbawua, has dismissed claims that the party is being structured to support the political ambition of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
His remarks come at a time of heightened political activity within opposition circles, following recent developments involving key political figures and shifting party affiliations.
Igbawua addressed the issue during a televised interview, where he responded to concerns about the direction of the party and its internal processes.
Speaking on the programme The Morning Brief aired by Channels Television, Igbawua rejected suggestions that the ADC is being positioned for any single individual.
He maintained that the party remains open and inclusive, with its structure designed to accommodate all members fairly.
According to him, the ADC operates on principles that allow aspirants to compete on an equal footing, without favouring any particular individual.
His comments were aimed at clarifying the party’s stance amid growing speculation about its internal arrangements.
The clarification comes shortly after the departure of two prominent political figures, Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who had previously contested the 2023 presidential election under different platforms.
Both individuals recently left the ADC to align with the Nigeria Democratic Congress.
Their exit from the party followed concerns they raised about ongoing litigations within the ADC and what they described as an unfavourable political environment.
These developments have drawn attention to internal dynamics within opposition parties and the challenges they face in maintaining cohesion.
Igbawua acknowledged the reasons provided by the defecting politicians but stated that he was not in a position to speak on their behalf.
He noted that political decisions such as defection are personal and often influenced by various factors, including strategic considerations and individual assessments of the political climate.
While expressing surprise at the reports of their departure, he emphasized that the ADC remains focused on its objectives and continues to function as a platform for political engagement and participation.
He said, “The fact remains that from the perspective of the political party there is nothing that should cause concern to anybody who is a member and who is aspiring to the office of president. As far as I can know now, we are aware that all the problems of the ADC are externally engineered, but we are overcoming them one by one….See More
