According to a video posted on the official YouTube channel of Arise News on Monday, May 11, 2026, former governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso, criticized politicians who distribute food items to gain support from northern voters ahead of elections.
Speaking during an interview on the country’s political situation, Kwankwaso expressed concern over what he described as the growing culture of using temporary welfare packages to influence citizens instead of addressing major economic and security challenges affecting the region.
The former minister of defence argued that many Nigerians, especially in the North, deserve long-term policies that can improve their living conditions rather than short-term political gestures during election periods.
While speaking on the issue, Kwankwaso said, “People are now distributing rice because they think northerners are like chickens; you throw them grains, they will come, and then you cut them down.”
He maintained that northern voters are becoming more politically aware and can no longer be deceived by handouts or material gifts during campaigns. According to him, citizens are now paying closer attention to leadership quality, economic policies, and the ability of politicians to solve insecurity and poverty.
