Uganda Detains 231 Foreign Nationals in Immigration Crackdown, 62 Nigerians Among Those Held

Ugandan authorities have detained 231 foreign nationals, including 62 Nigerians, during coordinated raids targeting illegal migration and suspected criminal activity.

The operation was carried out on April 27, 2026, in Adjumani District and the Bukoto–Ntinda area of Kampala following intelligence reports from members of the public.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs confirmed that the Nigerian suspects were allegedly operating a church and other business activities without valid work permits.

Ministry spokesperson Simon Peter Mundeyi said security teams acted on verified intelligence linking the group to irregular activities.

“These individuals were found operating under religious cover while engaging in unlawful activities. Acting on intelligence, we moved in and arrested them,” he stated.

Authorities said investigations are ongoing. Some suspects claimed they were deceived with fake job offers, while others are suspected of involvement in online fraud-related offences.

The arrested Nigerians and other foreign nationals are currently being held at the Namanve facility, where immigration procedures are underway. Officials said outcomes may include deportation, fines, or blacklisting depending on case findings.

In a separate operation in Kampala, 169 additional foreign nationals were arrested in a Bukoto apartment for lacking valid immigration documents. The group includes citizens from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Ghana, Myanmar, Ethiopia, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, and Malaysia, including 36 women.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing immigration laws and ensuring compliance among foreign residents.
