They Said We Should Be Thankful For One Meal A Day” — Okocha Recalls 1996 Olympic Struggles

Former Super Eagles captain Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha has opened up about the harsh conditions Nigeria’s U-23 team endured on the way to winning football gold at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Speaking in a recent interview, Okocha said the campaign that produced Nigeria’s historic first Olympic football title was marked by financial neglect from the Nigeria Football Association [NFA] at the time.

“We won the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, but the process was tough,” Okocha recalled. “The NFA didn’t pay for our hotel. We ate the same meal for a week. They kept giving us rice and sauce every day and one day, we went and asked how come they’re not changing our meal. They said we should be thankful we are still there because the NFA hadn’t paid for our meal and accommodation.”

According to the former midfielder, the players had to take matters into their own hands to stay in camp. “We had to use our own money for accommodation and rented mini vans to stay in camp,” he said.

Despite the off-field challenges, Nigeria’s “Dream Team” went on to defeat Brazil in the semi-final and Argentina 3-2 in the final, becoming the first African side to win Olympic football gold. The team was led by players like Nwankwo Kanu, Emmanuel Amuneke, and Okocha himself.

Okocha’s account adds to years of testimonies from members of that squad who say they played through unpaid allowances, poor logistics, and limited support. The 1996 victory remains one of Nigeria’s most celebrated sporting achievements.

The 51-year-old said the story is worth telling so younger players understand the sacrifices that came before them. “We didn’t have comfort, but we had belief in each other,” he noted.
