A video reportedly showing a kidnapped person in captivity has been circulating on TikTok and other platforms in Nigeria, sparking widespread condemnation and renewed calls for stronger security action in the Northwest.

According to posts shared online in early June 2026, the clip appears to show an individual in restraints with demands made for ransom. One version of the video was linked by users to an account associated with the name Bashir Kankara, and appeared shortly after reports of an incident in the Northwest region. The authenticity, exact location, and date of the footage have not been independently confirmed by authorities.

Security analysts say videos like this are part of a pattern used by criminal groups in parts of Katsina, Zamfara, Kaduna, and Sokoto states. The videos are often used to pressure families, intimidate communities, and draw attention online. Some groups have also been reported to use livestreams or repeated posts to amplify threats.

Nigerian security officials have repeatedly warned against sharing or amplifying such content, saying it can endanger victims, undermine investigations, and spread fear.
