SA: I Have Two Children There, I Left Them Behind Because Their Mother Is South African-Lucky

A Nigerian returnee from South Africa, Mr. Lucky, has revealed the emotional toll of leaving behind his two children after returning to Nigeria amid the recent wave of evacuations prompted by rising xenophobic tensions.

Speaking in an interview with Vanguard News TV, the Edo State indigene recounted the difficult decision to return home while his children remained in South Africa under the care of their mother, who is a South African citizen.

Describing the personal sacrifice, Lucky said he had no choice but to leave his children behind for their safety and stability while he focused on rebuilding his life in Nigeria. According to him, their mother is in a better position to care for them until he is financially and emotionally ready to reunite with them.

“I’ve got kids there. I have got two kids there. I left them behind because their mother is South African. She will be able to take care of them until I sort them out,” he said.

Lucky’s story highlights the human impact of the recent return of Nigerians from South Africa, where fears of xenophobic attacks and insecurity have forced many migrants to abandon their livelihoods and, in some cases, separate from their families.
