Murtala Assassination: He Was In Mercedes, These Guys Used Agbada To Cover Uniform And Parked-Irabor

Veteran broadcaster and media executive Sunny Irabor has shared details of the assassination of Nigeria’s former Head of State, Murtala Muhammed, describing how the military leader was ambushed while travelling in Lagos on February 13, 1976.

Irabor made the remarks during an interview on The Legacy Series, where he reflected on one of the most significant events in Nigeria’s political history. He recounted the circumstances surrounding the failed coup that claimed the life of Muhammed and left a lasting impact on the country.

Recalling the incident, Irabor said: “The guy was a regular man who was in his Mercedes car reading his newspaper and these guys used Agbada to cover their military uniform and parked their car at BP filling station at that time which became AP.”

According to Irabor, the attackers disguised themselves in traditional attire to avoid attracting suspicion before launching the deadly attack. He explained that Muhammed, known for his simple lifestyle and minimal security, was travelling in his official Mercedes-Benz when he encountered the armed soldiers.
