People Expect Me To Save Money To Pay Polling Unit Agents, But I Will Not Do That–Peter Obi

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has explained that his movement across political parties has been influenced by internal crises and legal disputes rather than personal convenience or personal ambition.

According to a report by Punch Newspaper on Thursday, May 7, 2026, Obi made this known during a visit to the permanent site of the University on the Niger, where he donated ₦25 million to support educational development.

Speaking at the event, Obi stated that his political decisions have always been guided by principles and concerns about instability within party structures. He explained that he has never left any political platform without serious reasons, noting that unresolved internal disagreements and legal battles often weaken parties and affect their ability to function effectively.

Addressing concerns surrounding his recent political alignment, following reports of his movement from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Obi maintained that party stability remains an important factor in his political involvement.

The former Governor of Anambra State stressed that unstable political structures cannot effectively deliver democratic governance. He added that if given the opportunity to lead Nigeria, he would prioritise building a strong and credible opposition capable of promoting accountability and strengthening democracy.

According to Obi, an effective opposition is necessary in every democratic system because it helps to scrutinise government actions, encourage transparency, and provide alternative solutions to national challenges.

He also expressed concern over the internal structure of many Nigerian political parties, stating that they are often driven by the struggle for power rather than ideology or democratic principles. According to him, this has contributed to recurring internal conflicts, leadership disputes, and weak party cohesion.

Obi called for stronger internal democracy within political parties, where members can freely express their opinions and participate meaningfully in decision-making processes.

Reaffirming his commitment to education and youth development, Obi stated that his personal resources are better invested in initiatives that improve access to quality learning opportunities.

He said, “People expect me to save money to pay polling unit agents, but I will not do that. Nigerians should learn to protect their votes themselves. I am spending my money on education because I believe in the future of young people.”

Obi added that citizens also have a responsibility to protect the integrity of elections and ensure that their votes count…See More
