Nnamdi Kanu is not a criminal His trial was political persecution – Sowore

Prominent human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has once again waded into one of the most controversial legal battles in the country, delivering a powerful defense of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Speaking on the prolonged detention and the seemingly endless legal hurdles facing the separatist leader, Sowore did not mince words in his assessment of the Federal Government’s handling of the high-profile case. The activist explicitly dismissed the terrorism and treasonable felony charges leveled against Kanu, arguing that the entire judicial process is severely compromised.

According to Sowore, the continued incarceration of the IPOB leader has nothing to do with national security or criminal justice, but is rather a calculated attempt by the ruling political establishment to suppress genuine demands for regional equity.

”Nnamdi Kanu is not a criminal. His trial is nothing but pure political persecution,” Sowore reportedly declared. He emphasized that advocating for self-determination or organizing protests to highlight the marginalization of a specific region does not make an individual an enemy of the state.

The activist drew parallels between Kanu’s ordeal and the broader culture of intolerance displayed by successive administrations toward dissenting voices. He argued that instead of addressing the root causes of the agitations in the South-East—such as infrastructural decay, economic exclusion, and perceived systemic injustice—the government has chosen the path of heavy-handedness and intimidation.

Sowore further challenged the current administration under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to rewrite the narrative by taking the political route to resolve the crisis. He urged the Federal Government to immediately drop all charges against Kanu, noting that his unconditional release is the first necessary step toward restoring lasting peace and economic stability to the South-East region.

As the legal team representing Nnamdi Kanu continues to battle in the appellate courts, Sowore’s bold intervention has reignited the national debate. Human rights organizations and regional stakeholders are increasingly echoing his sentiments, warning that relying strictly on the courts to solve a deeply political issue will only deepen the nation’s fault lines…See More
