Israel: I Cannot Give Backing To A Government That Harms National Security During Wartime–Haskel

According to a report by The Times of Israel, on Tuesday July 14, 2026, Deputy Foreign Minister Sharren Haskel announced her resignation from the Israeli government on Tuesday, delivering a sharp blow to the ruling coalition.

The decision followed the Knesset’s approval of a highly controversial piece of legislation that shields ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) men who avoid the country’s mandatory military service from arrest and legal prosecution.

Haskel, a member of the center-right New Hope party which joined the current governing coalition broke ranks with her fellow coalition lawmakers during the vote.

She refused to back the measure, arguing that it effectively extends sweeping enlistment exemptions for Haredi men for several more months.

In a stinging rebuke of the government’s direction, Haskel strongly criticized the legislation’s impact on active-duty soldiers and the broader defense establishment.

Explaining her reasons for stepping down, Haskel stated that the law:

“…harms national security, [IDF] service members and those who for three years now have been fighting on the frontlines for our sake and the country.”

She made it clear that she could no longer serve in an administration whose policies she believed undermined the country’s defense during an active conflict.
