Hurried Burial by Mary’s Family Must Be Resisted. She Died With Blood Flowing From Her Mouth- Sowore

Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has called for an immediate coroner’s inquest into the death of Mary Habila.

In a post shared on his X account on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, Sowore said a thorough forensic investigation should be carried out to determine the circumstances surrounding Habila’s death at the residence of the Minister of Works, David Umahi.

He pointed to reports that blood was seen coming from her mouth, arguing that the incident should not be treated as a natural death.

Sowore wrote, “it is in the interest of justice that all appropriate investigative and forensic procedures, including, where required by law, an autopsy and any other relevant inquiries, be completed before Mary Habila is buried. Any attempt at hurried burial by her family must be resisted. Ms. Mary Habila died with blood flowing from her mouth, which suggests that her death is unnatural.”

Mary Habila, a physiotherapist at the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences, died at the minister’s residence in Uburu, Ebonyi State, on June 27, 2026.

Since then, questions have continued to surround how she died and why she was at the property.

Umahi has acknowledged that the incident happened in his residence.

According to him, he immediately contacted the police and medical personnel after discovering the situation.

He also said he advised Habila’s family to approve an autopsy so the exact cause of death could be determined.

The minister explained that the family initially declined the request for a post-mortem examination, a decision that has drawn public attention and fueled speculation about the circumstances of her death.
