A young woman was discovered yesterday in a plantain farm by the roadside after what authorities suspect was a brutal assault, leaving her in critical condition.

According to eyewitnesses, passersby noticed the woman lying motionless in the farm and immediately alerted community members and local security operatives. She was found with visible injuries and was unable to speak coherently at the time of rescue. Residents say she was quickly rushed to the nearest medical facility for emergency treatment.

The incident occurred in an area along a major road, but the exact location and the identity of the victim have not been officially disclosed to protect her privacy and avoid jeopardizing the investigation.

Police have confirmed that they are aware of the case and have commenced an investigation. A spokesperson for the command stated that officers have visited the scene, collected preliminary evidence, and are working to identify and apprehend those responsible. No arrests have been announced as of press time.

Sexual assault is a criminal offense under Nigerian law and is punishable under the Criminal Code Act, the Penal Code, and the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act, 2015. The VAPP Act specifically provides for the protection of victims, including access to medical care, counseling, and legal support.

Women’s rights and civil society groups have called for a swift and thorough investigation, urging authorities to ensure the survivor receives comprehensive medical and psychological care. They also appealed to the public to avoid sharing unverified details or images that could compromise the case or further traumatize the victim.

“Cases like this require urgency, sensitivity, and confidentiality,” said a Port Harcourt-based gender advocate. “The priority now is the victim’s recovery and ensuring justice through due process.”
