DSTV must appear before this Senate. In South Africa, they charge per view but cheat us here in Nigeria” — Senate President Godwill Akpabio

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has stated that DSTV must appear before the Nigerian Senate to address concerns over its billing structure, alleging unfair practices in how subscriptions are charged in Nigeria compared to South Africa.

The remarks form part of ongoing legislative scrutiny of MultiChoice, the parent company of DSTV.

Akpabio referenced claims that while customers in South Africa may have flexible viewing options, Nigerian subscribers are placed on fixed monthly subscription packages regardless of how much content they consume.

Lawmakers have argued that this structure places an undue financial burden on Nigerian customers, especially amid rising living costs.

The Senate has been pushing for a transition to a pay-as-you-go billing model, where subscribers would pay based on actual channel usage rather than flat monthly fees.

Proponents of the proposal argue that such a model would introduce fairness and align costs with consumption patterns.

During the Senate session, Akpabio reportedly emphasized that DSTV representatives must appear before lawmakers to explain their pricing policies and respond to concerns.

MultiChoice has previously defended its pricing model, stating that subscription-based broadcasting differs from utilities such as electricity or telecommunications, and that package pricing reflects content acquisition costs, licensing agreements, and operational expenses. The company has also noted that pricing structures may vary by country due to market conditions, regulatory frameworks, and currency fluctuations.

The debate over DSTV’s billing system has resurfaced repeatedly in Nigeria, particularly during periods of tariff adjustments. Consumer advocacy groups have long called for greater flexibility, while industry analysts caution that implementing a pure pay-per-view model for satellite television may involve complex technical and contractual considerations….See More
