The alleged conspiracy to overthrow Nigeria’s constitutional order was neither a spontaneous act nor the work of a small, isolated group of disgruntled individuals — it was a well-structured and deliberately coordinated plot involving a network of actors far broader and more diverse than was initially apparent at the time of the first arrests, a former senior intelligence official has asserted.
Dennis Amachree, former Assistant Director of the Department of State Services, made the assessment during an interview with TVC’s News at 10, responding to questions about what the composition of the accused — a striking cross-section of retired military officers, active security personnel, and civilians — reveals about the nature and scale of the alleged conspiracy.
“It is not isolated,” Amachree said with certainty. “I think it was a well-coordinated plot, and I am very sure the initial inquiries and investigations must have shown that actually a lot of people are involved.”

When the first wave of arrests was made, the public profile of the case appeared relatively contained — focused primarily on serving and retired military personnel. The subsequent emergence of a much wider cast of accused, including civilians and a police officer, signalled to Amachree that a deeper and more elaborate network had been operating beneath the surface.
“When the first people were arrested, we did not know about the electricians, the civilians, the police officer, or even some retired officers or civilian politicians who are at large right now,” he noted, describing the progressive unravelling of the network as a testament to the thoroughness of the security agencies’ investigative work….
