Former Department of State Services (DSS) Assistant Director Dennis Amachree has recounted his version of the events surrounding the death of former Nigerian Head of State, General Sani Abacha, including details of an interview he said he conducted with a woman who was reportedly present at the time of the incident.
According to a report by TheCable published on July 21, 2026, Amachree made the statements during an interview in which he reflected on his role in the investigation that followed Abacha’s death in June 1998.
Amachree alleged that the former military ruler died while in the company of a woman at the Aso Rock Guest House. He claimed that shortly after the incident, the woman left the premises and travelled to Lagos.
According to his account, the DSS headquarters later instructed him to track her down and bring her in for questioning. Describing the operation, Amachree said, “I was instructed by the DSS headquarters to go after her. We traced her to Lagos, arrested her, and brought her to my office for interrogation.”
He stated that he personally questioned the woman and said her first response was to deny any involvement in Abacha’s death.
Recalling the exchange, Amachree quoted her as saying, “I did not kill him. He died on top of me.”
According to Amachree, the woman consistently maintained throughout the interrogation that she had played no role in the former Head of State’s death. He said she repeatedly insisted, “I didn’t kill him. He just died on top of me.”
Amachree further claimed that the woman later provided a detailed account of the events leading up to Abacha’s death. Based on her explanation, he said he concluded that the former military leader had suffered a heart attack while they were together.
Reflecting on his assessment, he stated, “After listening to her detailed account, it was clear to me that he had suffered a heart attack while they were having sex.”
He added that he immediately communicated his findings to senior DSS officials in Abuja, saying, “After her detailed account, I called the Director in Abuja, and she was immediately flown back.”
Amachree maintained that, based on everything the woman told him during the interrogation, he found no evidence to suggest that she was responsible for Abacha’s death. As he put it, “From everything she told me, there was nothing to suggest that she killed him…See_More
