The meeting held yesterday between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has generated fresh controversy and political debate.
According to The Nation, the encounter marked the first private, one-on-one meeting between the two leaders since Governor Makinde’s media interview last month, in which he openly stated that he would not support President Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
In that interview, Makinde also alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) was fueling the internal crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as part of a broader plan to impose a one-party system in the country.
The Oyo State governor further claimed that the President failed to honour an agreement reached ahead of the 2023 general elections in exchange for his support. He also accused the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, of assuring the President that he would “hold down” the PDP to clear the path for Tinubu’s victory in 2027.
Following the meeting at the Presidential Villa, Makinde addressed journalists, describing his relationship with President Tinubu as “harmonious.” He maintained that nothing he had said or done was inconsistent with maintaining a cordial relationship with the President.
However, the narrative was challenged by former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose, who issued a statement suggesting that the meeting at Aso Rock did not go smoothly for Governor Makinde, contrary to his public remarks.
Fayose added: “Here is the true story of what happened in the Villa when Governor Seyi Makinde visited the President today (yesterday).
“First, Governor Seyi Makinde demonstrated that he lacked enough courage to face the President alone. He had to enlist the support of the Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang.
