According to a report by the Punch on Sunday, May 3, 2026, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has officially left the Peoples Democratic Party for the Allied Peoples Movement amid the deepening crisis within the opposition party.
The governor announced his defection on Saturday after consultations with political stakeholders, explaining that the Supreme Court judgment on the PDP leadership dispute played a major role in his decision. He said the ruling created uncertainty over the party’s legal and organisational structure.
The development comes as indications also emerged that Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde may soon leave the PDP following ongoing leadership disagreements and internal divisions within the party.
Sunday PUNCH gathered that Makinde had already instructed aspirants loyal to him in Oyo State not to purchase PDP nomination forms ahead of the coming elections.
A source within the Governor’s Office reportedly said: “The governor has directed all the aspirants in the PDP not to obtain forms under the PDP.”
The source added that consultations were ongoing regarding the next political platform the governor and his allies might adopt, with the National Democratic Congress and the Allied Peoples Movement reportedly among the options being considered.
Another party leader in the South-West also disclosed that Makinde was expected to leave the PDP soon, although the final destination of the governor and his loyalists had not been officially confirmed.
A member of Makinde’s cabinet similarly revealed that discussions were ongoing about possible alternatives ahead of an expected resignation from the PDP.
However, Makinde’s Chief Press Secretary, Sulaimon Olanrewaju, denied knowledge of any official defection plan by the governor.
Meanwhile, Bala Mohammed defended his own decision to leave the PDP, saying he had spent days in Abuja meeting with stakeholders in an attempt to resolve the party’s internal crisis before concluding that the situation had become too uncertain.
He explained that the Supreme Court ruling nullifying parallel PDP conventions left both rival factions without clear legal authority, further worsening instability within the party.
Despite his exit, Mohammed expressed appreciation to the PDP for providing him with a platform for political growth and public service, insisting that his departure was not motivated by bitterness but by the need to maintain political stability and continuity.
The governor announced that he and his supporters would now continue their political activities under the platform of the Allied Peoples Movement, which he described as free from internal legal disputes.
The National Chairman of the APM, Yusuf Dantalle, later welcomed Mohammed and his supporters into the party, describing the APM as a stable and democratic political platform committed to integrity and service….See More
