Former Deputy Director of Defence Administration at the Defence Headquarters, Commodore Kunle Olawunmi, has stated that he was never afraid of being victimised for speaking the truth during former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. He said that although he was once declared wanted by security authorities, he faced the situation boldly without fear.
According to a report by Punch on Sunday, November 2, 2025, Olawunmi said that when he was declared wanted, he went to Abuja with human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, to meet the officials directly. He explained that he took Falana along not because he was afraid but to have someone as a witness in case anything happened to him. In his words, “They declared me wanted, and I went to them in Abuja with Femi Falana, SAN”
Olawunmi said he knew how the system worked and that a person could easily “disappear” between Lagos and Abuja without a trace, which was why he wanted a trusted lawyer to accompany him. Olawunmi said they met with the officials, spoke with them, and returned safely the same day. In his word, “The reason was to have someone who would be a witness to my whereabouts because I know the system. I can disappear between Lagos and Abuja”
Olawunmi added that after the incident, people from countries like Japan, Canada, the United States, France, and Israel offered to help him relocate. He said he refused the offers because he had no reason to run away.
