A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Oba Maduabuchi, has explained the recent Supreme Court decision on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) crisis, saying the ruling clarified who the real leaders of the party are.
Speaking during an interview on Arise TV, he said there were two separate appeals before the court. According to him, one of the appeals was successful, while the other, linked to the group of former National Secretary Sam Anyanwu, was dismissed. This, he explained, means that Anyanwu’s group no longer has any valid claim within the party structure.
Maduabuchi noted that the judgment also affects the faction associated with Nyesom Wike, as the dismissal of Anyanwu’s appeal weakens their position. With that, he said attention shifts to the remaining leadership bloc.
However, he pointed out that the Supreme Court ruled that the process that produced Umar Damagum’s rival, known as Turaki, as national chairman was invalid. This means Turaki’s leadership, along with the executives formed under him, does not stand.
Despite this, Maduabuchi stressed that the PDP as a political party remains intact. He explained that only the leadership structure that produced Turaki was affected, not the entire party.
He added that the group that originally emerged from Damagum remains the valid foundation of the party. According to him, any faction that traces its origin to that structure is likely to be seen as the authentic leadership moving forward.
