Campaign Ogidi, mother of the late Oghenemine Ogidi, has recounted the painful circumstances surrounding the death of her son, alleging that he was killed at the age of 28 by Assistant Superintendent of Police, Nuhu Usman, in Delta State.
Speaking during an interview with News Central TV, Mrs Ogidi described the killing of Oghenemine as the second time she has lost a son to police action, a tragedy she said has left her family devastated and traumatized. According to her, the latest incident has reopened painful memories of an earlier loss involving another of her sons, Oghenerume, who she said was also killed by the police years ago under troubling circumstances.
Mrs Ogidi stated that her first son, Oghenerume Ogidi, was only 18 years old when he was allegedly killed by police officers. She explained that on the night of the incident, Oghenerume had gone out simply to charge his mobile phone when he was arrested by police officers around 8 p.m. According to her account, there was no indication that he was armed or involved in any criminal activity at the time of his arrest. She said the family expected he would be released after questioning, but instead received devastating news the following morning.
According to Mrs Ogidi, before 8 a.m. the next day, the family was informed that Oghenerume had been killed by the same police who had taken him into custody hours earlier. She said what made the incident more painful was that officers allegedly never claimed to have recovered any weapon from him at the time of his arrest, raising serious questions about the circumstances that led to his death.
Recalling the repeated loss, Mrs Ogidi said the police have now taken two of her sons, first Oghenerume at 18 and now Oghenemine at 28. Her emotional testimony has intensified public concern over allegations of police brutality and abuse of power in Nigeria, especially in cases involving young civilians.
The case has added to growing calls for accountability within the Nigeria Police Force, with rights advocates and concerned citizens demanding a transparent investigation into the deaths. Observers say the allegations further highlight longstanding concerns over unlawful killings, abuse of authority, and the urgent need for reforms within Nigeria’s policing system. As public attention continues to grow, many are calling for justice for the Ogidi family and accountability for all officers found responsible…See More
