According to a report by the Punch on Thursday, March 26, 2026, a coalition of pan-Yoruba organisations under the Alliance for Yoruba Democratic Movements has raised fresh concerns over Nigeria’s security and political climate, warning that rising insecurity may be linked to interests within the political space.
The group made its position known in a communiqué issued after a two-day conference in Lagos, where participants highlighted what they described as an escalation in terrorist activities and evolving tactics, including the use of improvised explosive devices.
They alleged that some actors within the political class were indirectly fueling instability, stressing that the country is facing a complex form of terrorism driven by economic and ideological influences.
Beyond security concerns, the coalition also weighed in on the 2027 presidential election, calling for adherence to power rotation as a means of maintaining national balance and unity. They argued that fairness in leadership distribution remains critical to preventing deeper divisions.
Expressing a firm stance on the issue, the communiqué stated, “Any attempt by the North to produce the next President is unacceptable and will be resisted,” warning that such a move could heighten tensions across regions.
The group urged the administration of Bola Tinubu and the National Assembly to prioritise structural reforms, including the establishment of state police and broader decentralisation of the security framework.
They maintained that restructuring remains essential to addressing both the security challenges and governance imbalances confronting the country.
