According to a report by The Vanguard on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, Nigeria’s opposition parties are facing deep internal crises ahead of the 2027 general elections, with major platforms splitting into bitter factions.
As primary deadlines loom, the disarray threatens their collective ambition to challenge President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is deeply divided between two groups selling separate nomination forms. The Kabiru Turaki-led faction has named former President Goodluck Jonathan as its sole aspirant, supported by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde.
Conversely, the Nyesom Wike-backed faction is pushing Senator Sandy Onor. Both sides claim a recent Supreme Court verdict legitimises their leadership.

High-profile contenders including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi openly voted in their respective wards. Atiku is heavily favoured to win after receiving endorsements from several state chapters.
However, a rival faction bypassed this process, declaring the 2023 candidate, Dumebi Kachikwu, as its consensus flagbearer.
The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has similarly split, putting forward two distinct candidates: Prince Adewolu Adebayo and Abimbola Atanda.
Amid the chaos, only a few parties remain united. The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has locked in Peter Obi as its sole aspirant, while Accord is backing Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim.
Meanwhile, Donald Duke is expected to clinch the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) ticket. ADC spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi has slammed the APC, accusing the ruling party of inflating its membership figures to prepare the ground for rigging the 2027 polls….See More
