Nigerian politician, Hilda Dokubo has taken her official X account on Friday, January 16, 2026 to react to report of 7.5% deduction on bank transactions.
According to THE CABLE, banks will start deducting 7.5 percent value-added tax (VAT) on banking services, including point of sale (POS) transaction fees, mobile banking transfer fees, from January 19, 2026.
Reacting to the report, Hilda Dokubo described the decision as double taxation and a form of robbery. She said whoever that is advising the administration of President Bola Ahmed is not doing the right thing.
She said the people of Nigeria are being taxed before their salaries are being paid therefore, there is no need taxing them when they are trying to spend the salaries on groceries, school fees and other things.
Hilda Dokubo stated that the 7.5% deduction will only increase the rate of poverty in the country.
According to Hilda Dokubo on her official X account;
“Whoever is advising this administration on taxes should know that this their 7.5% on online banking transactions is not just double taxation, it is robbery dressed up in designer gear. Working Nigerians are usually taxed before they are paid their salaries”.
