Efemena Umukoro has alleged that a police officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, was involved in extortion while serving in Jesse, Delta State. Speaking during an interview on News Central TV, Umukoro claimed the officer’s past actions were ignored, allowing him to continue misconduct.
According to Umukoro, the incident began when Usman arrested a suspect who was reportedly found with a firearm. Instead of following due process, he and another officer, identified as CSP Chidi Nwabueze, allegedly collected 2.5 million naira from the suspect’s family in exchange for his release.
Umukoro further explained that after realizing the suspect’s family had financial means, the officers allegedly continued to demand more money. The suspect remained in custody for about seven days despite the payment.
The situation reportedly changed when a magistrate from the Jesse Court visited the police station, requested to see the suspect, and ordered his release. However, Umukoro claimed the officers refused, fearing that releasing the suspect would expose their actions after collecting the money.
To avoid this, the officers allegedly told the family that the case had been transferred to Asaba. This led to protests from the family, who insisted their relative should not be moved after payment had already been made.
Umukoro said he reported the case to higher authorities, believing the officer had been arrested, only to later discover that he had instead been transferred to another station.
