Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has humorously recounted a conversation he had with Senate President Godswill Akpabio about his political future, saying he jokingly told the Senate President that he would rather contest for the Senate and aspire to become Senate President than return for another term as a minister.
According to a video shared by TVC on Friday, July 17, 2026, Wike made the remarks during the celebration marking the completion and inauguration of 31 projects executed by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA). The event was attended by senior government officials, lawmakers and political leaders, with Akpabio representing President Bola Tinubu.
Addressing guests at the ceremony, Wike reflected on a lighthearted discussion he had with the Senate President concerning his political future. According to him, some people had suggested that if President Tinubu wins a second term, he could continue serving as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
The former Rivers State governor, however, said he jokingly presented a different political plan to Akpabio.
Recounting the exchange, Wike said, “My leader, the Senate President, who is representing Mr. President. We were discussing, and when they said you’re coming back as a second-term minister, I told him, ‘No, the senator representing my senatorial district, Rivers East, Senator Allwell Onyesoh, will withdraw when the time comes for change, and then I’m going to run for Senate, and I’ll run for Senate President.’ He now said, ‘My friend, I’ve told you what you should go and do.’”
The audience responded with laughter as Wike narrated the story, indicating that the exchange was made in a humorous context.
He continued by teasing Akpabio over the conversation, saying, “Don’t worry yourself. I know you are hearing me. I’m only joking.” His remark drew another round of laughter from those present, reinforcing the lighthearted atmosphere of the event.
Wike also used the occasion to commend the Senate President for maintaining a cordial working relationship with the executive arm of government. He praised Akpabio’s leadership of the National Assembly and thanked lawmakers for supporting projects and initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure in the Federal Capital Territory.
The FCT minister further expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for giving him the opportunity to serve in the administration, saying the completion of the 31 projects reflected the President’s commitment to delivering visible development to residents of Abuja.
According to Wike, the projects were completed within a relatively short period because of the support he received from the President, members of the National Assembly and officials of the FCT Administration…See_More
