A soldier who survived the deadly attack on a military base in Benisheikh, Borno State, has shared how the situation quickly turned from controlled resistance to fear and confusion.

According to a report by Punch on Saturday, April 11, 2026, he stated that troops initially held their positions when the insurgents attacked in the middle of the night. Despite the heavy gunfire and explosions, the soldiers tried to defend the base and push back the attackers.

However, the situation became more difficult as the attackers advanced in large numbers and from different directions at the same time. This made it hard for the troops to respond effectively, as they were forced to fight on multiple fronts.

Things took a worse turn when rumours began to spread among the soldiers that other nearby military positions had already been overrun. This created panic and weakened their confidence.

The breaking point came when word spread that the Brigade Commander, General Oseni Braimah, had been killed during the attack. Hearing this caused fear to spread quickly among the troops, affecting their coordination and ability to continue fighting as a unit.

As the battle intensified, some soldiers were forced to retreat towards the town for safety. The confusion created an opportunity for the attackers to cause more destruction and loot military equipment.

The soldier described the attack as highly coordinated and more intense than previous encounters, showing how dangerous and unpredictable the conflict has become.
