Jelilat has responded to the divorce case filed against her by her husband, Mutairu, denying most of the accusations he made in court. She described his claims as untrue and said he was only trying to gain sympathy and favour from the court.
According to a report by Nigerian Tribune on Saturday, April 11, 2026, she stated that there was never a time she threatened or harassed her husband, as he alleged. She also challenged his claim about paying her bride price, insisting that he never paid any money to her family.
However, Jelilat admitted one part of the accusation. She acknowledged that she stopped cooking for her husband, explaining that she did so because she believes he does not deserve such treatment. Her statement suggests that there are deeper issues in their marriage that led to her decision.
Despite agreeing that the marriage should end, Jelilat strongly opposed her husband’s request for custody of their children. She argued that giving him custody would not be in the children’s best interest. According to her, he has a mean attitude and could influence the children negatively, especially by turning them against her.
The court is expected to decide on both the divorce and custody arrangements after reviewing all the arguments presented by both sides.
