The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has heavily criticized President Bola Tinubu over the Federal Government’s response to the continuous captivity of schoolchildren in Oyo State. In a sharp political critique, Obi demanded that the President either step down immediately or entirely forfeit his plans to run for a second term in office.
In a post on his official X handle, Obi expressed deep anger over the security lapse following a solidarity visit to Ibadan alongside political economist Professor Pat Utomi. The delegation met with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde to discuss the fate of the pupils and teachers who were forcefully taken by bandits from the Oriire Local Government Area.
Obi heavily decried what he termed “uncompassionate leadership,” highlighting that more than 50 days have passed since the students were kidnapped with no major breakthrough in their rescue operations.
Drawing a sharp parallel to the 2014 Chibok girls’ kidnapping, Obi reminded the public that when the incident occurred under former President Goodluck Jonathan, Bola Tinubu led a vocal wave of opposition figures demanding Jonathan’s immediate resignation over a two-week delay in calling the affected state governor.
