Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s candidate for the 2023 presidential election, has taken aim at President Bola Tinubu regarding the situation of abducted schoolchildren in Oyo State, expressing his disbelief that Governor Seyi Makinde had not been contacted by the President over 50 days since the event.
In a message shared on X, Obi remarked that the deteriorating security environment reflected a lack of leadership and empathy. He mentioned that he had publicly addressed the incident, urged the kidnappers to release the children, and had reached out to Makinde twice to show his backing.
Obi stated that he later visited Ibadan alongside Pat Utomi to speak with the governor about the extended captivity of the students and other Nigerians still being held by abductors.
As per Obi, he recalled his time as a former governor, noting that in the past, presidents routinely communicated with state governors during significant security emergencies. He expressed his surprise that Tinubu had not made an effort to contact Makinde regarding the abduction.
Obi also drew a parallel with the kidnapping of the Chibok schoolgirls, pointing out that Tinubu had criticized former President Goodluck Jonathan for his actions back then.
He contended that the present administration lacked sufficient urgency and care, suggesting that the President ought to either resign or refrain from running for re-election for the nation’s sake.
