Prof. Martin: No One Has Said Why DSS Had To Arrest That Old Man, He Did Nothing Wrong

Chidi Odinkalu, a renowned human rights activist and former chairman of the national human rights commission has raised serious concerns over the arrest and detention of Professor Martin Aghaji, a former vice chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

According to the statements which were shared on his official X handle on Monday July 6th, 2026 he pointed out that the inability of any individual or group to disclose a single offence committed by the elderly man cast shadows on the credibility of the Department of State Security Service, DSS.

Professor Martin Aghaji, a renowned and well respected cardiothoracic surgeon, it can be recalled, was on the spotlight after he was briefly arrested and detained by the DSS, a move which sparked massive public debate.

However, while the reasons behind his arrest were not ventilated to the general public, many argued that his apprehension might not be unconnected to his role as a personal physician to the now detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

Chidi Odinkalu, widely admired for his outspokenness, while pointing out that not a single individual or group had disclosed the reasons why he was apprehended by DSS, maintained that the old man had done nothing wrong.
