Sowore: Obi’s praise for north is hypocrisy — as Anambra governor, he repatriated northerners

According to a report by The Cable on Thursday, April 23, 2026, as a presidential candidate for the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore has accused Peter Obi of being politically opportunistic and inconsistent after he recently called northern Nigeria the country’s “greatest asset.” Obi is a chieftain of the Labour Party.

The northern part of Nigeria, according to Obi, has the country’s long-term economic strength due to its large areas of undeveloped land and agricultural potential. He claims that changing the country’s attention to agriculture might lessen its dependency on oil while simultaneously increasing national income.

The north is where we have the most success. “Our future is in the vast, uncultivated land in the north,” Obi declared. “Our nation can generate more revenue through farming than through oil, and we ought to start doing that right away.”

But Sowore brushed off the remarks, saying they were an attempt to curry favour with northern voters in the run-up to future elections.

He stated that Obi’s present stance on national unity and regional development is at odds with his record as governor of Anambra State, and that his administration’s actions did not line up with these claims.

Sowore stated that it seems like Obi is trying to gain political benefit by suddenly praising the north.

All of Nigeria has the potential to become a tremendous asset, according to Sowore. “If you go to the north, yes, we can turn the north into the greatest asset,” he added. “The whole country of Nigeria is valuable.”

Going a step further, he said that while Obi was governor, there were cases of people being evacuated from northern Nigeria and sent back to their home regions, which he said went against the current discourse of national inclusivity.

He says that the level of involvement Obi had with northern Nigerians when in office was inadequate and did not represent the unity he currently promotes.

The north is an asset, but he forgot that moment. Concerning what he saw as inconsistent political messaging, Sowore warned supporters not to be swayed by the fact that he now wanted to behave like it.

All of the country’s regions, he said, should be included equally in national development plans because of their enormous economic potential.

You have the north to your advantage. There is a lot of value in the south. “The entire country, including the north-central and south-west regions, is an asset,” he declared.

Furthermore, according to Sowore, the main problem in Nigeria is not a lack of regional balance but a lack of leadership. He maintained that if the government were to implement successful policies, then all of Nigeria would be able to enjoy wealth.

A change in leadership is all that’s needed, he added. Every location has the potential to generate wealth and opportunity if the correct leadership is in charge. Every direction has the potential to prosper….See More
