According to a report by This Day Live on Monday, April 27, 2026, Olusegun Obasanjo Former President has stated that any administration that cannot ensure the protection of lives and property lacks legitimacy, presenting a critical view of the growing insecurity and leadership difficulties facing Nigeria.
He attributed the country’s worsening situation to ineffective leadership, stressing that Nigeria has steadily lost its standing in global affairs while also mismanaging crucial relationships within the Economic Community of West African States.
Obasanjo highlighted that leadership shortcomings have not only affected domestic stability but have also weakened Nigeria’s influence across the West African region, where it once played a dominant and stabilizing role.
Speaking during an interview on News Central’s Soni Irabor Live programme over the weekend, he expressed concern that Nigeria no longer plays an active role in shaping international decisions, indicating that the nation has gradually been sidelined in global discussions.
He further noted that the country’s inability to assert itself beyond its borders reflects deeper structural and leadership issues, which continue to affect both governance and national development.
Obasanjo also drew attention to the normalization of insecurity, particularly kidnapping, describing it as a troubling development that has become embedded in everyday life for many Nigerians.
He warned that accepting such conditions would further erode societal values and national stability, stressing the need for urgent action to address the security crisis.
He said, “And somebody was telling me the other day that, look, we’ve taken it (kidnapping) for granted. It’s no longer news. So when you hear that somebody in your family has been kidnapped, you all come together. Even for N2,000, maybe they can release him. Should we accept that as a way of life? No way….See More
