A driver in Ondo State who stole his employer’s Hyundai Elantra and ran to Abuja has been arrested, in a case that is drawing amused and critical reactions online.
According to a post from @NigeriaStories, the suspect fled with the black sedan but was tracked down and picked up shortly after arriving in the capital.
The incident began in Ondo after the driver allegedly took the employer’s car without permission and drove straight to Abuja, likely believing distance would cover his tracks.
He did not get far. Security operatives tracked the vehicle and intercepted him in an outdoor detention scene. Photos shared online show the suspect barefoot, with his face blurred and hands restrained, standing beside the recovered Hyundai Elantra.
No injuries were reported, and the car was returned to the owner.
The arrest highlights how common vehicle tracking systems have become in Nigeria. Many car owners now install GPS trackers, immobilizers, and app-based monitoring, especially for commercial and staff-used vehicles.
Once the theft was reported, the tracker gave the car’s live location, allowing operatives to move fast from Ondo to Abuja. What the driver may have seen as an easy escape turned into a rapid capture.
“The days of ‘carry car run go another state’ are over,” one X user wrote. “Trackers are everywhere now.”
Comments on the post were mixed. Some users mocked the barefoot photo and the failed plan: “Abuja is not a hideout. It’s a trap now.” Others were critical of the act itself, noting the breach of trust involved when a driver steals from an employer.
A number of commenters used the case to warn workers and employers alike: install trackers, vet staff properly, and don’t assume a long road means you won’t be found.
Police in Abuja said the suspect is in custody and will be transferred to Ondo for further investigation and prosecution. Charges are expected to include theft and unlawful possession of property…See More
