According to a report by TVC News on Thursday 8th January 2026, the Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has condemned the move by the Rivers State House of Assembly to initiate impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, describing it as unnecessary and capable of plunging the state into instability.
In a statement released on Thursday, the party said it was alarmed by developments in the Assembly, noting that although the legislature has constitutional powers of oversight, impeachment should not be used as a tool to resolve political disagreements.
The APC warned that internal disputes within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) must not be allowed to spill over into governance and disrupt the administration of the APC-led government in Rivers State.
The party linked the impeachment threat to disagreements over budgetary matters, arguing that such issues fall short of the constitutional grounds required for removing a sitting governor.
Recalling events during the period of emergency rule, the APC stated that the 2025 budget was transmitted to the National Assembly by the President in May 2025 and duly approved by the Senate on June 25, 2025, and by the House of Representatives on July 22, 2025; The ₦1.485 trillion budget, the party noted, is meant to cover expenditures until August 2026.
According to the APC, Governor Fubara is under no constitutional obligation to present a supplementary budget if he is satisfied with the existing appropriation, adding that the Constitution also permits continued spending for up to six months into a new fiscal year.
The party urged members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, especially APC lawmakers, to resist external influences aimed at undermining the government.
“We will not allow the APC-led administration in Rivers State to be weakened by political scheming,” the statement said.
The APC called for an immediate halt to the impeachment process, warning that it could tarnish the party’s image and derail ongoing development efforts across the state.
It concluded by appealing to all political actors to place the interest of Rivers State above personal or party rivalries and allow governance to take precedence.
