Our weapons are outdated, and there is no way we can squarely confront these criminals – Police

According to a report by the Punch on Saturday, May 9, 2026, worsening insecurity across several parts of Nigeria has continued to expose the deep challenges confronting security agencies, particularly in rural communities where police presence has either collapsed completely or remains severely inadequate. In states such as Zamfara, Sokoto, Niger and Plateau, residents said armed bandits and terrorists now operate with little resistance, attacking villages, kidnapping residents and forcing thousands to flee their homes due to the absence of effective security protection.

In Zamfara State especially, community leaders lamented that many villages have been abandoned by security personnel after repeated attacks by armed groups. Residents disclosed that some communities now rely almost entirely on vigilantes and informal local security groups for survival, while others travel long distances before they can access any police assistance during emergencies.

A senior police officer in the state admitted that officers are facing enormous difficulties in confronting the heavily armed criminals terrorising rural areas. According to him, security operatives are often outnumbered during attacks, making it difficult to repel the assailants effectively.

“Our weapons are outdated, and there is no way we can squarely confront these criminals,” the officer said while explaining the harsh realities officers encounter during operations against bandits who frequently move in large groups with sophisticated weapons.

The officer further revealed that many policemen are left vulnerable during attacks because of poor logistics, inadequate operational support and insufficient manpower across dangerous areas. He explained that in several instances, officers are forced to retreat during attacks simply to stay alive, especially when confronted by criminals with superior firepower.

Many villagers said they now live in constant fear, with some abandoning their homes at night to sleep in safer locations or nearby bushes to avoid attacks by bandits who often strike without warning….See More
