Okonkwo Maintains That National Assembly Must Review Specific Sections Of The Electoral Act

According to AIT on Sunday, April 26, 2026, legal practitioner and opposition figure Kenneth Okonkwo discussed the resolutions made by opposition parties during the Ibadan summit.

Okonkwo argued at the beginning of his address that democracy without an active opposition contains a political weakness that will eventually lead to its destruction.

He stated at the 0:07 mark that the essence of democracy is power for the people and a government installed through elections that offer a genuine necessity for choice.

The politician insisted at the 0:21 mark that if there are no opposition parties, there can be no choices, and a single-candidate system constitutes an imposition.

He revealed at the 0:30 mark that the APC is attempting to force a one-party state on Nigeria, which prompted the gathering of opposition parties in Ibadan.

Okonkwo stated at the 0:46 mark that the opposition will resist the attempt to impose a one-party system with everything within their power.

He revealed at the 1:04 mark that the coalition will field candidates for every office, from the presidency down to all other elective positions.

The legal practitioner argued at the 1:10 mark that the opposition will dismantle efforts by the ruling party to ensure that the presidency runs unopposed in 2027.

He challenged the standing of the INEC Chairman at the 1:25 mark, alleging that the chairman has become partisan and possesses questionable integrity.

Okonkwo insisted at the 1:37 mark that the current commission leadership cannot organize a free, fair, or credible election in 2027.

He maintained at the 1:54 mark that the National Assembly must remove problematic sections of the Electoral Act that impact the integrity of the voting process.

The politician specifically cited Section 60, Subsection (3) at the 2:02 mark as a provision that he said allows for the manipulation of election results.
