According to a report by Times of Israel, on Thursday December 18, 2025, Iranian-born agents working for Israel’s Mossad intelligence service did not know they were participating in strikes against their homeland’s nuclear facilities and ballistic missile program, according to Israeli officials, raising ethical questions about the use of covert operatives.
The agents, numbering more than 100, were armed and trained for specific missions without being informed of the broader strategic objectives or the nature of their targets. Some received training directly in Israel, believing they were being prepared for limited intelligence operations rather than direct military action against Iran’s most sensitive installations.
“This operation is unprecedented in history,” stated an Israeli official. “We mobilized our own assets and agents to go close to Tehran and launch the ground operation before the air force could enter Iranian airspace.”
The agents received specific tactical assignments but were kept in the dark about the comprehensive nature of the assault on Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile capabilities. This compartmentalization reflected standard intelligence practices but on an unusually large and consequential scale.
Each agent was given particular objectives suited to their access and capabilities, but without understanding how their individual missions fit into the larger operation. This approach ensured that even if some agents were captured or compromised, they could not reveal the full scope of the planned assault.
The agents were equipped with specialized three-piece weapon systems designed for precision strikes. They received training on the use of this equipment, but apparently without full understanding of what their targets would be or the strategic significance of their actions.
